Replacing a Gas Range: What to Confirm Before Delivery
The range arriving at your door and the range being ready to cook on are two different milestones. Plan both before the old one leaves.

Before you plan
Start with the appliance and site details
Before a replacement gas range arrives, confirm the exact model and fuel, the kitchen opening and delivery route, who disconnects the old appliance, and who completes the new installation. Share the manufacturer installation documents with your gas installer before delivery. Do not assume the delivery crew will alter gas piping, arrange other trades or make a different fuel model suitable for your home.
Step
Choose the model before arranging the connection
A product family name is not enough to plan an installation. Send the full model number and the Canadian installation documents for the exact range you intend to buy. Include the fuel type shown in the order. Similar-looking ranges can have different installation details, so an appliance that fits the showroom description may still need a closer look in your kitchen.
If you are replacing gas with gas, say so. If the old appliance is electric or the new range is moving to another wall, identify that early. Those are not the same job as replacing a range in an unchanged location.
Our gas appliance installation service starts with the appliance and the site together. Getting those details reviewed before delivery is particularly useful when a sale or a holiday meal creates pressure to order quickly. A delivery date is not confirmation that every part of the installation is ready.
Step
Check the kitchen as a finished room
Record the opening and show the surrounding countertop, cabinets, backsplash and range hood in your photos. Include the floor and the space in front of the appliance. A tight photograph of the old cooktop can miss the details that explain how the replacement will sit in the room.
Whirlpool Canada's installation information includes the anti-tip device as part of range installation and directs installers to an appropriate existing gas connection. Treat that as a reminder to review the exact product requirements, not a universal installation specification for every range.
If new flooring, cabinets or countertops are planned, share the finished dimensions and the sequence of that work. Do not ask the installer to make a final connection while the design is still changing. Ask who checks the hood arrangement and any electrical requirements. A range replacement can involve more than the fuel connection, and those responsibilities should be agreed rather than discovered on arrival.

Step
Separate delivery, removal and installation
Read the services on the actual order, not only the retailer's delivery banner. GE Appliances Canada distinguishes delivery from gas installation and sets conditions for its removal service. Other retailers may have different arrangements. Their policies are not a promise about what a separate installer will provide.
Ask three direct questions: who disconnects the old range, who takes it away and who makes the new appliance ready for use? Put a name or company beside each task. Confirm whether the old appliance has to be disconnected before the delivery crew arrives and arrange qualified gas work accordingly.
Do not pull out or disconnect a connected range yourself to meet a haul-away deadline. If there is a scheduling gap, discuss it before booking the delivery rather than improvising once a truck is at the door. Keep the installer and retailer informed if the delivery time changes, especially when several appointments depend on the same morning.
Step
Plan the route from the truck to the kitchen
Walk the delivery route as a planning exercise, without moving the connected appliance. Note stairs, tight turns, narrow entries and anything that could prevent a large packaged item reaching the kitchen. Ask the delivery company which dimensions and access details it needs, and who handles any agreed door removal or other preparation.
For a Whitby condo or townhouse with shared access, check the building's delivery arrangements, elevator booking and contractor access with the property manager. Do not assume that a delivery booking reserves the space for a separate installation visit as well.
Keep a realistic place available for packaging and the old appliance if they will not leave immediately. Decide who will be present to inspect the delivered product against the order. If the model is wrong or the appliance is visibly damaged, resolve that with the retailer before treating the planned connection appointment as the next automatic step.

Send the model, kitchen photos and expected delivery date. We can review the installation details before it arrives.
Step
Identify changes that need a wider plan
Moving the cooking area to an island or adding gas to a kitchen is a renovation decision, not just a delivery detail. Share the layout before cabinets close the proposed route. The gas installer needs to review the project, and other trades may need to coordinate their work around it.
The existing whole-home gas appliance planning guide explains the wider supply questions. Use it when the range is new to the home's gas system rather than repeating the load discussion in a delivery booking. For new or altered piping, gas-line installation is the relevant service conversation.
Be clear about what is already finished and what is still proposed. A drawing labelled "future island" should not be mistaken for the present appliance location. Keep model changes visible too: if you switch ranges after a site review, send the new documents before assuming the previous plan still applies.
Step
Leave room for the installation handoff
With Thanksgiving approaching, it is tempting to treat the arrival date as a guaranteed first-use date. Build your meal plans around a completed installation and handoff instead. Ask about the expected sequence and avoid promising guests a kitchen that depends on an unconfirmed delivery or another trade finishing at the last minute.
Before the visit, keep the paperwork and supplied components together. Ask the installer which operating instructions will be covered and how to keep the model, installation record and warranty information organized. Confirm whom to contact if an appliance issue and an installation question arise later; they may follow different routes.
The aim is a straightforward handoff: the agreed work is complete, the appliance is ready for its intended use and you know where the instructions are. A range merely sitting in the opening does not establish those things. Set aside time for that final conversation rather than arranging to leave as soon as it is moved into place.
Questions we hear
Frequently asked questions
Not necessarily. Check the services on your order and confirm the gas installation booking separately. Also establish who handles disconnection and removal of the old appliance.
That needs an installer review of the replacement model and the existing setup. The fact that a gas range was there before does not establish that every connection detail is suitable for the new appliance.
Yes. Sharing the exact model and installation documents before ordering leaves more room to resolve fit, fuel and project-scope questions without working around a delivered appliance.
