Planning a Residential Gas Line in Ontario

A residential gas-line plan begins with every current and proposed appliance, its manufacturer input data, the fuel and supply context, a feasible protected route, shutoff and service access, excavation and locate needs, approval or inspection requirements, testing, commissioning and finish restoration. These inputs must be assessed together. A convenient route is not automatically a compliant or serviceable route, and this guide does not provide pipe sizes or installation instructions.

Define the finished outcome before discussing a route
Start with what the project must support when it is complete. Name the appliance, its intended location, whether it is new or a replacement, and who is supplying it. A range relocation, pool heater, fireplace, outdoor kitchen and permanent fire feature each create different questions about demand, controls, ventilation, access and construction. Include whether the appliance has already been selected and whether the manufacturer documents are available. Describe finished surfaces that matter: drywall, cabinetry, stone, deck framing, landscaping, concrete and pool work. The assessment can then evaluate a complete outcome rather than treating the pipe as an isolated object. Purchasing equipment before route and supply review can create avoidable redesign.

A gas system serves the combined demand of connected appliances, not just the newest branch. Assessment should consider how the piping is supported and protected, where required shutoffs and connections remain accessible, how the appliance will be serviced and whether the route conflicts with other systems. Homeowners can help by sharing drawings and pointing out finished areas, but should not drill exploratory holes or expose concealed services. A route can pass through more than one environment, and the materials, protection, corrosion considerations and transitions are not interchangeable. Buried work adds excavation, locate and restoration requirements. Exterior work must account for exposure and potential damage. Interior work must remain compatible with the building and appliance installation. Do not assume that a material seen at one part of a property can simply continue everywhere else. During the assessment, identify segment boundaries, entry points, finished surfaces, drainage or moisture conditions, vehicle or equipment paths and future construction zones. This information lets the qualified designer choose compliant materials and protection without turning a homeowner planning document into an installation schematic.

Natural gas and propane require separate planning
Natural gas and propane are not interchangeable labels for the same installation. The selected appliance must be approved and configured for the actual fuel, and the supply, regulator and storage or utility context differ. Never change an orifice, regulator setting, rating plate or fuel-conversion component without qualified service and an approved kit for the exact appliance. For natural gas, utility-side capacity or meter questions may need Enbridge Gas involvement. For propane, the supplier and storage system become part of the planning conversation. Tell the assessor the present fuel, photograph accessible labels and disclose any planned conversion. No appliance should be connected or operated on a fuel other than the one for which it is correctly configured.

Arrange public and private locates before excavation
Ontario One Call states that a locate request is required before digging and explains that the person doing the excavation is responsible for obtaining it. Its homeowner guidance also distinguishes public utility locates from privately owned infrastructure. A gas line from a house to a barbecue or pool heater can be private infrastructure and may need a competent private locator in addition to the public locate process. Build locate lead time into the schedule and wait for all required responses and documentation before excavation begins. Share the final dig area accurately and do not move markings. A locate does not authorize gas work or replace route design; it identifies buried infrastructure so excavation can be planned more safely.

Clarify permits, inspections and contractor status
Requirements can depend on the appliance, fuel, municipality, property and wider construction scope. Ask who will determine which permits, notifications or inspections apply, who will arrange them and what records the homeowner receives. TSSA explains that most fuels regulations call for contractors in Ontario to be registered and that registered fuels contractors are responsible for using the appropriate certificate holders for the work. Verify the business in the public TSSA fuels-contractor register and ask which technician certificate applies to the project. Business registration and an individual technician certificate are different checks.

Testing and commissioning are part of the scope
A gas line is not complete merely because piping has reached the appliance. The finished scope should identify who performs required testing, verifies operating conditions, connects the approved appliance, follows manufacturer instructions, commissions the equipment and records the result. These are controlled technical activities, not steps for a homeowner checklist. Do not use air compressors, improvised gauges, soap solutions, flames or appliance operation to conduct your own test. Ask what access must remain available until the work and any inspection are complete, and when walls, trenches or finishes can be closed. If another trade is restoring finishes, sequence that work after the responsible parties confirm that their required access is no longer needed.

Coordinate all trades before finished work locks the route
Outdoor kitchens, pools, decks and fireplaces often involve several contractors. Cabinet dimensions, appliance specifications, pool plumbing, electrical supply, venting, masonry, concrete, drainage and landscaping can all affect where gas components can be installed and serviced. Assign responsibilities in writing: who provides the appliance, who prepares access, who excavates, who obtains locates, who performs gas work, who supplies electrical work and who restores finishes. Confirm decision dates before stone, drywall, cabinetry or decking closes the proposed route. A short coordination meeting or marked plan can prevent one trade from placing equipment where another trade needs required clearance or access. The gas assessor should review changes rather than inheriting them after construction.

Collect manufacturer data and the appliance inventory, then have a qualified person assess and calculate the system.
Ontario One Call notifies owners of participating buried public infrastructure. Its homeowner guidance says private lines, including a house-to-barbecue or house-to-pool-heater gas line, may require a competent private locator. The excavator still needs the appropriate public locate request before digging.
